Letter to the Editor:

Supreme Court endangers us all

There is a clear and present danger that our democracy is in jeopardy, a threat to America as we know it.

The questions directed to the Justice Department attorney by Supreme Court justices in the presidential immunity case should concern Americans who value freedom, safety and democracy.

The Supreme Court should not have taken this simple, open-and-shut case under consideration. It has placed its weight on the scale of justice by allowing immunity to a private citizen. Hearing this case, which has been clearly resolved by a lower court, allows Trump a form of immunity via delay.

The court, with three justices appointed by Trump, is politically minded. This is evident by the rulings coming from the court in the past two years. If they rule Trump has immunity, we will have neighbor against neighbor in the coming months. Everyone will be in danger.

Who would follow the law? Who would enforce it? The court itself would render its existence illegitimate.

We have an important election in November. The American people will not accept a president who is under the cloud of unresolved criminal charges. This immunity claim would allow any president to avoid criminal charges. There would only be a political remedy and that would only apply to a sitting president under the articles of impeachment.

What this would signal to the current president and his team? That they can remain in office as long as they like, so long as they have control over the House and Senate?
